In August 2007 I moved to DC following a heartbreak. The move was a spontaneous decision, one my gut was telling me to make. At the time, I felt my life falling into pieces around me, and I had no idea how to rebuild. I decided to take fate into my own hands and create a new life for myself. As soon as the breakup happened, I realized I had lost myself in a relationship that was never going to work. I had lost sight of who I was and what I wanted from my life.
There were ups and downs, days when I wasn’t sure if I would make it through. Then there were days where I could see the light. The first month I was in DC (before I found a job), I spent a lot of time wandering around the city exploring on my own. I still felt directionless, but for the first time in a long time, I started feeling like me again. I thought about all I wanted to accomplish in my life.
So I made a list. I wanted to get everything out of my head and onto paper. I wanted to remind myself of the life I wanted to create, so if I ever got off track, I could look back at the list. After I wrote the list, I folded it up and placed it in a journal. Because I’m notorious for buying and starting new journals without finishing one (I have a box full of half written-in journals), I forgot about what I had written.
Almost six years later, when I was preparing to move out of DC, I came across the list I made. I was astonished to find I was living the life I wrote about when I was at the depths of my despair.
Some of the things on my list back in August 2007:
My journey to location independence, world travel, and being a business owner has been a life-long one. The story of The Life Adventurista is a culmination of love, activism, creativity, wanderlust, heartbreak, fear, happiness, and risk-taking.
It wasn’t just one thing that lead me to creating The Life Adventurista. Every single event and experience in my life has brought me here. Because of this, I really struggled with figuring out a way to share my story without writing a book. I considered not writing this post, but I believe in the power of sharing our own stories, and knew that I wanted people to really know me and how I got here, before deciding to work with me. Then my friend Shenee from Hot Brand Action suggested I create a fun little timeline using pictures. She’s brilliant, right?
After months of behind-the-scenes work, brainstorming with many others, and lots of ups-and-downs, I’m excited to finally release The Life Adventurista website into the world.
Let the adventures begin!
Welcome to The Life Adventurista, a resource center for unconventional, changemaking women who want more than the standard + white-picket-fence kind of life experience!
My name is Shannon, and I’m a business strategist, lifestyle designer, and activist. I created The Life Adventurista, because I wanted to combine the three things I’m most passionate about – business, travel, and activism.
My goal is to inspire you to live the life you always dreamed of. Whether that means creating a business doing what you love, traveling across the country with your family in an Airstream, infusing your life with more international travel, being bi-coastal, or living in your dream location.
Hiking Delicate Arch in Arches National Park over the summer.
At the heart of all of this is freedom and a sense of adventure. To me, that’s what being a Life Adventurista is all about. Live the life you want. On your own terms. All while doing your part to make this world a little bit better.
It all boils down to having a work situation that allows you to choose where (and how) you spend your time.
My own quest for freedom, adventure, and purpose-driven work led me to location independence and creating The Life Adventurista.
So each week I’ll be sharing lessons I’ve learned in my own quest, tips on building a business and life that provides you with freedom, how to bust those pesky fears that are limiting you (soon I’ll even be sharing my plans to confront my own fears), interviews with other life adventuristas, and weekly exercises to help you take that leap into the life you’ve always wanted.
